Yugoslavia revives in Serbia

Yesterday I took the bus from Sarajevo (Bosnia) to Belgrade (Serbia). In Sarajevo I thought to be close to the bus station, but they told me I had to be at the other one. So a 40 minutes bus ride through the city, but in time for the Belfrage one. Arriving early in the evening at the apartment in Belgrade, no number or sign at which of the many apartments I should ring the bell. Luckily at that moment a helpful young man comes out and he makes a call, I get the code of the box with the key and so on. I’m close to the center and it’s lively in town.

Today I visit Belgrade by light. I walk along the chic Moskva Hotel where people want to be seen further into town. More beautiful old buildings and at Kalemegdan Park I wander around in the old castle, many gates and a few big walls. Back in downtown a visit to the National Museum at the Republic Square, see more of the city, including the Saint Sava Cathedral with it’s golden interior, and take the free bus to the Yugoslavia Museum. Back in time and of course a Tito statue. At the river side a modern Belgrade rises, with its twisted Belgrade tower as landmark.

The next day I take the bus to Novi Sad, the first impression is the Soviet style residentials, but downtown has more to offer, with the Orthodox Cathedral of Saint George and Dunavska street. Cross the river Danube and walk up into the fort. Amazing views over the city.

Thursday I take the bus to Uzice and arrive around noon. Check in at the hotel and back to the bus station to go to Zlatibor, more into the mountains. A cable car of some 9 km takes me up the mountain. The landscape is beautiful and on top of the mountain the views are great. Even with the misty weather. Some beautiful tracks through the forest and yes, up is quite heavy with the 35 C. Most remarkable of Uzice is the brutalisk Zlatibor Tower.
