I arrive in Grenada on an ATR-72 and move into Mitchell’s Guest House in St George. Super friendly welcome and she immediately arranges a trip for me for tomorrow. Top. Into the city, to the central market, where everything and everyone comes together. There is a large cruise ship in the harbor and a shopping center has been built on the pier. The marina is more attractive, with some English colonial buildings, now in use especially by the government. Fort George is being renovated, the cathedral and the National Museum deserve a visit. The next day a van arrives at the door and I am the only tourist. He takes me inland and along the way he tells a lot of stories. A beautiful viewpoint here and there and then we arrive at Grand Etang Lake and the surrounding park. Koi and tilapia swim in the lake, a monkey sits obediently on the entrance gate and likes to have its picture taken with tourists… or the rewarding banana. He has done this before. A little further on, the car is exchanged for a set of legs and we take a hike through the rainforest to the 7 sisters waterfalls. The waterfalls are not special, but the hike is beautiful. On the way back to St George we visit Fort Frederick. This was built by the French, but never used due to a treaty with the English. The view of the harbor and inland is still beautiful.
Grenada consists of more islands so I take the ferry to Carriacou. I am picked up at the ferry and when I arrive at dusk, I wonder where I have ended. The welcome is friendly and the apartment is beautiful inside. The owner assures me that it is safe to go into the city. Hillsborough is indeed safe, but poorly lit. I can order fish and fries at a local stall at a local home. This is popular and there is a queue. In daylight I explore the island a bit more and in several places the result of the hurricane of July last year is still clearly visible. The white beach and the bright blue water are beautiful again.
