Friday 7 March
This morning on time at the ferry and it leaves on time. Around noon we arrive in Castries on Dominica. Here the usual nonsense at customs. You have no proof of departure? It is also a bit difficult when the website of the French ferry company is so unclear. I really have to book first. The lady from the ferry company helps out, because the wifi does not work here or hardly and the great website of the ferry immediately throws you out if you are too slow. By the way, it is only in French and often not correct either. The employee also has trouble with this. I book a ferry to Guadeloupe and I am allowed into the country. Missed opportunity for the country again. Another tourist who leaves earlier and spends less. To my booked accommodation, Narakiel’s Inn on the edge of the center. Th town is not that big. Only 65,000 people live on the island. In the afternoon into the city and have a look around. It is clear that they mainly rely on the large cruise ships that come here every day. Enough spam at the harbor.
Dominica is not known for its beaches, but for its rugged nature with the nine volcanoes on the island. With guide Jason and German Bodo, I do a few hikes. One to the Middleham Falls, a challenging hike, but it is beautiful to walk through the rainforest and be rewarded with a beautiful waterfall. Fresh Water Lake is a must and on the way to Boeri Lake we see a wild Mara monkey, who almost seems trained, or really likes bananas. Later we jump into the cold water to swim through the Titou Gorge to the waterfall at the end. Beautiful. After a strenuous hike, a cool down is always nice. See and feel some hot springs. There is still a large waterfall missing, Trafalgar Falls, the Papa and the Mama, also definitely worth it. In addition to the mountain area, Dominica also has something to offer in the sea on the coast, Champagne Bay, with a coral reef where the bubbles come out of the bottom. Beautiful to swim through here while snorkeling.
